Today is a bit of an earth science class. We tied some string around a waterproof thermometer and threw it over the edge of the hot spring to measure its temperature. This wasn't as easy as expected since the string kept getting tangled in the bushes lining the side of the spring. Everyone had different termperature readings; probably depending on where the thermometer was thrown. We then threw in some crushed ping pong balls to see if the heat will make it swell back to its original shape. Not all worked unfortunately, perhaps it needed to be in the hot water longer. Some of us tested the pH level of the water and a pH 3 reading was recorded. We then visited a garbage incinerator and the surrounding area has been developed into a community centre. There are parks, a kindergarten and a revolving restaurant on the 120th feet where we had lunch. Afterwards, we took the high speed rail to Taizhong to visit a former earthquake zone where some school buildings were destroyed and left as is to remind everyone to be mindful of earthquakes. Some of us got to experience an earthquake at the earthquake simulator. In the evening, we took the high speed rail to Hsinchu.
